Effects of the family context on the communicative and language development of infants and toddlers (Master thesis)

During infancy and toddlerhood, children's language develops rapidly. However, there are many individual differences resulting from interactions between biological and environmental factors. During this developmental phase of language, the environment that most directly affects a child's development is the family environment. However, research studying the effect of the family environment on children's language development has mostly focused on children of pre-primary or primary school age. The proposed study aims to investigate the influence of several characteristics of the context in which infants and toddlers grow up in Greece. A wide range of factors were investigated, which include individual child characteristics, family demographic factors and the role of parents in language development. For the purposes of the study, a battery of questionnaires was administered electronically to 625 parents of children aged 7-34 months. Specifically, the questionnaire battery consisted of (a) the Communication Development Report (Karousou & Petrogiannis, 2014), (b) the Home Learning Environment Scale (Niklas et al., 2016) (c) the Book Reading Practices Questionnaire (Karousou & Economakou, in press) and a (d) General Information Questionnaire. The results highlight the factors and activities of the family learning environment that affect the linguistic indicators of vocabulary, morphology and syntax. Shared reading strategies based on dialogic reading emerge as particularly important, as they seem to be positively correlated with the above-mentioned indicators of language development in infancy and toddlerhood. The results are discussed on the basis of previous related findings and both theoretical and applied implications are highlighted.
