Intercultural education and religious diversity: (Bachelor thesis)

This paper focuses on the monitoring and interpretation of options for kindergarten teachers in organizing and conducting national and religious celebrations in the modern kindergarten. It presents a comparative survey among school celebrations that took place in kindergartens with a multicultural student population of two clearly distinct regions of Greece. One, at a kindergarten in Thrace, particularly in Xanthi, with mixed student population (Greek-speaking Christians and Turkish-speaking Muslim students, the second group prevailing numerically) and the second in a kindergarten in Peloponnese and in particular in Corinth, with mixed population (Greek-speaking, Greek citizens Christians and immigrant children from different countries of the Balkans, with the first group prevailing numerically). The elaboration of this paper was based on the study of relevant available bibliography. We found, therefore, that there was no undergraduate research, at least, covering this field and examining the attitudes of teachers towards pupils with different intercultural background in school holidays, whether religious or national. Our initial hypothesis, always based on our experience, it was that these students are often marginalized and not invited to get involved at all. Researching the attitude of kindergarten teachers showed that while on the first level such a situation is not an absolute rule, there are several student-integration efforts. Our findings, thus, confirm to some extent our initial assumptions. The paper is divided in two parts. In the first part, based on the available scientific bibliography there is an extensive reference to the key terms we use and in the educational models associated with intercultural education. Then, there is a reference to the role of the broader educational community to the successful implementation of school celebrations and the role of these in the contemporary kindergarten In the second part, the objectives of the work are described, as well as, the research tools and the methodology of research and, finally, the presentation of the findings.
