Representations, aesthetics and interpretation of illustrated children’s books. (Bachelor thesis)

Τσακαλίδου, Σοφία/ Tsakalidou, Sophia

This paper aims to highlight the value and nature of illustration today as a distinct art form, while our interest is focused on the children's own perspective on the reality of the images in children's books. Following this line of thinking, we set out to explore the ways in which children perceive and interpret illustrations and their conventions, and the points at which their interest converges. In order to explore the above, we chose to use four different wordless books, and gave the children the opportunity to get to know and explore them during an orchestrated natural discussion, where without interference or guidance, we ponder their assumptions and thoughts - giving space to everyone's imagination and creativity. And ultimately we end up discussing the unique ways in which children interpret and read the plot through the illustrations, and the ways in which they interpret and perceive conventions, while assigning corresponding value to their points of interest in relation to the illustrations - studying the causes that may have caused it.
