The present thesis discusses aspects and dimensions of applying group counseling through art with the method of dramatherapy in the fields of lifelong learning and adult education. It researches the potential contribution of counseling through art in strengthening the incentives and degree of involvement of group members in education. It focuses on reinforcing social skills, such as communication, empathy and better self- knowledge. The thesis focuses on applying counseling in intercultural adult education in a group context which draws from Sue Jennings 'Developmental Model/Embodiment- Projection-Role' (EPR). It employs group work in a dramatherapeutic context utilizing creative art tools, such as acting, drawing, music and body movement.The empirical part of the study was based on qualitative methodology and the tools of semi-structured interviews and action research.The research was concluded in three consecutive phases. In the pilot phase, the research tool (a counseling group through art, focusing on dramatherapy) was tested with a counseling group of trainee social workers. During the second phase, the experience of ten adult educators (experts) was studied, concerning counseling via the contribution of art in adult education. In the third phase, the contribution of counseling through art in adult education was studied, by conducting an action research. More specifically, the development and appraisal of a counseling group through dramatherapy with adult immigrants and refugees, participants in a Greek language training course, was studied. The appraisal of the group members’ experience, as well as everyone involved (Interpreter, Greek language teachers and members of the counseling center) was elicited by means of semi structured interviews, conducted by an independent researcher. The research material includes recorded interviews, videotaped group sessions, with the consent of the participants, the researcher’s and interpreter’s diaries, the report written by the independent researcher, as well as, the creative material produced by the two groups. The content analysis method was employed to analyze the research material.The present study is a complex design project that suggests new ways of handling issues, related to the support and the empowerment of adult learners and strengthening their relationship with education.It also highlights points that need to be investigated further, relating to the enrichment and maximizing gains of adult education and continuous learning fields, with experiential practices.
