Approaching cultural diversity through the technique of photo elicitation with primary school children (Master thesis)

Images play a crucial role in enriching our cultural values and the interpretations of the world surrounding us. They have the power to capture important moments, preserve memories and channel emotions and narrations. The research that is the subject of this study concerns photography and the ways in which it can be linked to cultural diversity. Its purpose is to approach cultural diversity through the use of 11 photographs shot by an American photographer, Vivian Maier, whose work reveals the diversity of urban life and brings forth social inequalities, as well as people's everyday moments. Maier had a unique ability of capturing the human condition with her photographic lens. The tools used for the production of the data were that of photographic visualization combined with observation and recording of data, for the qualitative approach. The activity was carried out within five teaching hours in a school classroom, of which the photo elicitation technique was applied in the first two. The third and fourth teaching hours included the creation of a collective project in 3 groups of students and the last teaching hour included their presentation. The sample consisted of 15 fifth grade students of a primary school in the Prefecture of Attica. The central findings unveil the skills that the students develop through their participation in the aforementioned activity, such as the skill of visual literacy. Additionally, the development of communication and collaborative skills was observed, as well as the cultivation of empathy and the acceptance of cultural diversity. The specific findings are manifested in the creations of the participants and the discussions that arose through this process.
