Promoting participation rights for preschool children from different cultural backgrounds (Bachelor thesis)

The present thesis is a research effort that focuses on participation rights of children from different cultural backgrounds in kindergarten. The aim of the research is to investigate the perceptions and reported practices of kindergarten teachers in relation to the implementation of this right in the classroom. Initially, the aim was to highlight their perceptions in relation to active participation, the importance of its promotion in the classroom and the practices they apply. In addition, factors that may facilitate or limit children's active participation, particularly those from different cultural backgrounds, were recorded. Sixteen kindergarten teachers, working in public kindergartens in the prefecture of Evros and Xanthi, took part in the study, applying purposeful sampling. The main criteria were the presence or not of children from different cultural backgrounds in the classroom, their educational experience, and their training on issues related to children's active participation. Qualitative methodology was used to conduct the study and data was collected through semi- structured interviews. Although all teachers openly acknowledged the right of children’s participation in kindergarten regardless their cultural backgrounds, they also openly acknowledged that the effort to apply theory into practice is quite difficult and requires a lot of engagement from all sides. The content analysis applied revealed that teachers face various problems in promoting active participation especially of children from different cultural backgrounds, especially in terms of language communication as well as training.
