Toys-objects for children of preschool and first school age: (Master thesis)

Πατρωνίδου, Γεωργία/ Patronidou, Georgia

Parents choose toys for their children usually to enhance their psychomotor, cognitive, social-emotional and their language development, but also for entertainment purposes. The criteria however vary as they may focus on the content of the toy, on safety, on psychosocial education and on cooperative action to be promoted. However, the knowledge of parents regarding the assessment of toys seems to be limited. This paper deals with the play in preschool and first school age children and is accompanied by the presentation of research on parents' criteria for choosing toys. More specifically, in the first part of the theoretical frame of this work, a literature review is carried out on what is play, its types, its characteristics and its value. And particularly its contribution to physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of the children. The second part presents the classical and modern theories that have been developed about playing. In the third part of the work, reference is made to the factors that influence the choice of toys by parents as they are mentioned in the relevant literature and confirmed by relevant research. In addition, reference has been made to the role of advertising and the commercialization of toys. The second part of the paper presents the research that has been carried out. Reference has been made to its elements such as the necessity of its implementation. In addition, the results obtained from the analysis of the data and collected from the distributed questionnaires are presented. Finally, the conclusions of the research are presented. In particular, the proposed study aimed to investigate the criteria by which parents of preschool and first school-age children choose toys in our country. A wide range of factors that appear in the literature to influence parents' choices were studied, including: safety issues, children's interests and abilities, behavior patterns, design features, build quality and cost. The methodology for the needs of this particular study was quantitative research. For the needs of the research, a questionnaire was administered in electronic form and was fulfilled by 361 parents of the territory up to 9 years of age of different sex, age, economic and educational level. Through convenience sampling, parents completed A. Kabadayi’s (2014) “Toy Selection Preference Questionnaire” to gather data on toy selection criteria and a “General Information Questionnaire” on their demographic characteristics. The “Toy Selection Preference Questionnaire” was adapted to the Greek language. Then the data were collected, analyzed in frequencies and percentages, followed by statistical analysis between the independent and dependent variables of the research, in order to answer the research questions and the research hypotheses that were raised. What was found from the research was about the various criteria that parents set, regarding their choice of toys. These include the child's age, interests, safety features and financial cost. Overall, toys are chosen for children based on their needs, interests and values in order to provide a necessary and enjoyable experience for them.
