Correlation of Follicle-stimulating Hormone Receptor Gene Polymorphisms (FSHR) with the role of Vitamin D in IVF (Bachelor thesis)

The formation and functioning of FSH receptor (receiver) has always been closely linked to the ovary function, being a fundamental regulator on the positive ovary response towards medical stimulations. Nonetheless, its correlation to the vitamin D is yet uncleared. The present study investigated the association of FSH receptor gene (FSHR) polymorphism in women with an expected good response to ovarian stimulation with serine (Ser) allele at position 680, with their vitamin D levels in their peripheral blood. Values of follicular vitamin D levels measured by the RIA method were correlated with serine (Ser) allele FSHR polymorphism at position 680, as well as with the FSH levels of these women prior to the onset of ovarian stimulation.To conduct this study, dataset was established from different patients who visited Alexandroupolis Hospital University from September 2016 up to March 2017. More specifically, a statistical analysis was performed on a total of 23 women who carried in their genotype the serine (Ser) allele at position 680, either in homozygosity or heterozygosity and in a previous laboratory study it was shown that, while not initially characterized as "poor respondents" presented Poor results in IVF compared to women who had other FSH receptor polymorphisms. Subsequently, the vitamin D concentrations of these women in the peripheral blood were determined. In conclusion, the results of our study showed that vitamin D and FSHR, in women that did not fulfill the criteria for poor response (Bologna criteria) and with the allele Ser at position 680 of the FSHR gene, either in homozygosity or eterozygosity, have a negative correlation between them.
