Συσχέτιση επαγγέλματος του άντρα με παραμέτρους σπέρματος (Bachelor thesis)

Infertility affects several couples trying to conceive and one of the factors that may cause it is male exposure to factors that affect sperm quality in his work environment. These factors can be chemical, physical or radiation. Sperm quality is evaluated based on parameters determined macroscopically and mainly microscopically, such as sperm concentration, total sperm count and A+B motility, for which the World Health Organization (WHO) has set limits. The purpose of this project is to determine if there is a correlation between male occupation and sperm parameters, such as sperm concentration, total sperm count, A+B motility, round cells concentration and leukocyte concentration, as well as whether there is a correlation between male age and sperm quality and a correlation between IVF outcome and male characteristics. This project included data from 519 men who visited IVF Unit in University Hospital of Alexandroupolis during the period 2012-2018 in order to determine the correlation between male occupation and sperm parameters and the correlation between male age and sperm quality. The correlation between IVF outcome and male characteristics was investigated in 183 couples who visited IVF Unit in University Hospital of Alexandroupolis during the period 2012-2018, in which the female factor was excluded by selecting couples that the woman was ≤35 years old and the factor was tubal or male. The data used were sperm concentration, total sperm count, A+B sperm motility, round cells concentration, leukocyte concentration, male occupation, exposure to toxic factors or radiation, male age and IVF outcome. The results showed that there is a correlation between round cells concentration and most male occupations and recording of round cells in future studies would be helpful. No correlation was found between the rest of the sperm parameters and male occupation. The population studied was small and most occupations are not exposed to toxic factors so further studies is needed to draw safer conclusions.
