INTRODUCTION: Recent research data demonstrate the need for a sensitive and specific method for the effective diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) and Pulmonary Embolism. These two respiratory diseases are of great concern to the scientific community due to their increased morbidity and mortality rates. It is typically reported that in the US COPD is the 4th leading cause of death, while PE is fatal for 7-11% of patients. Both COPD and PE are characterized by great heterogeneity in terms of symptoms, their manifestation and epidemiology, making the correct diagnosis even more demanding. AIM: The present dissertation aims at the study of patients with COPD and / or PE using scintigraphic techniques, in order to correlate the findings with the severity of the disease they present. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study took place in the Nuclear Medicine laboratory of Democritus University of Thrace. A total of 20 patients, 15 men and 5 women from the University Pulmonology Clinic, as well as from the University Pathology Clinics were studied. Most had a sign of a possible pulmonary embolism. Patients were subjected to a Ventilation scintigraphy with Technegas technique using a suspension of Tc-99m-labeled carbon nanoparticles and to a Perfusion scintigraphy using Tc-99m MAA human albumin macroaggregates. RESULTS: 4 of the 20 patients showed normal scintigraphy, i.e. correspondence between the ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy (matching). The 11 showed a mismatch between the scintigraphs, which is evaluated as a pathological finding. CONCLUSIONS: The methods used are safe for patients and non-invasive. They show high reliability for the diagnosis of lung diseases, are characterized by high sensitivity and specificity and help to avoid the issuance of false positive or negative results. Finally, the combination of these two techniques is pathognomonic for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.
