Εκτίμηση με την ραδιοανοσομετρική μέθοδο RIA των τιμών της βιταμίνης D στον ορό ασθενών με οστεοχονδρίτιδα και φλεγμονώδεις ορθοπεδικές νόσους (Bachelor thesis)

INTRODUCTION The most well-known, until recently, effect of vitamin D is increasing the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine to form and maintain healthy bones as well as to enhance neuromuscular function. Recent studies correlate low serum vitamin D levels with bone diseases. PURPOSE The present study evaluates the values of Vitamin D in serum of patients with inflamatory bone diseases in order to correlate with the severity of the disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was conducted at the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory of the Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace. 186 patients, 75 men and 111 women, from 44 to 68 years of age (mean age 58 ± 7 years) with inflamatory bone diseases were studied. Patients were predominantly from the Alexandroupolis General University Hospital. Every patiend had Blood sampling to estimate the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D determination in the immunoassay laboratory section of the Laboratory. The RIA radioimmunoassay method, with the Dia-Sorin ITALY kit. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. Used the x2 student test. RESULTS 80.7 % of patients had Vit D deficiency, 12,2 % inadequacy and 7,1 % sufficiency No diferances between men and women were found. Very low levels of Vit D had patients with severe inflamatory bone diseases . (p <0.005). CONCLUSIONS It is concluded that the determination of Vitamin D serum levels of patients with inflamatory bone diseases is useful. Very low levels of Vit D were associated with severe inflamatory bone diseases Measurement of vitamin D in serum of patients with osteohondraitis is a safe, useful and accurate method that can be used in assessing the severity of the disease. Further studies are needed on the possible improvement of patients after sublementation.
