The present dissertation was completed in accordance with the regulations of the “Education for the Environment and Sustainability” masters’ program offered by the Department of Education Sciences in Early Childhood of the School of Education Sciences in the Democritus University of Thrace and in particular as part of the “History of Cities” course. The main topic with which is occupied the present study is the presentation and analysis of the phenomenon of benefaction in the city of Xanthi from the late eighteenth (18 th ) century until the first half of the twentieth (20 th ) century. More specifically, this study examines the role of benefaction in the evolution and development of the Greek-Orthodox community of the city of Xanthi in direct relation to the historical and geopolitical context of the 19th century’s Ottoman Empire. As a result, emphasis is given to the connection of benefaction with the irredentism of the Greek-Orthodox community of Xanthe as well as to its contribution to the community’s wider effort to protect its identity and cohesion under the threat of the Bulgarian expansionism that emerged in late 19th century. Simultaneously, an attempt is made to illuminate the unique conditions under which benefaction -which was already flourishing both in metropolitan Greece and in the Greek diaspora - appeared in the city of Xanthe. Finally, the contribution of the Greek benefactors, who through their “works” left their mark in the architectural and cultural heritage of the Xanthe but also equipped it with essential educational and welfare institutions that led to the city’s population and economic growth.
