Children's books as a means of psycosocial development: (Master thesis)

Λιαρούδη, Παναγιώτα/ Liaroudi, Panagiota

This thesis examines the contribution of children ΄s books and generally children ΄s literature to the psychosocial development of children. More specifically, it examines the way in which empathy can be cultivated by means of illustrated books. Empathy for anyone “different” constitutes an essential stepping stone for the child’s psychological and social development. The necessity for cultivating empathy is imperative nowdays, since the problems of racism, xenophobia and social isolation of groups are rising. So, through literature, children can develop the skill of walking in other people΄s shoes so that they can understand and respect them and support their struggle. In that way, children can be helped to develop social skills. In order to show how illustrated books contribute to the cultivation of empathy, in the first chapter of the theoretical part of our thesis we examine the role of children ΄s books and more specifically of illustrated ones as well as how important illustration is for a child to be able to create images and draw conclusions while reading. We also examine the ideological role of illustration. In the second chapter we present the definition of “phychosocial development” of children and how children ΄s books contribute to this process. The term empathy is particularly stressed as its cultivation plays a vital role in the psychosocial development of children. Finally, the third chapter of the theoretical part of the project aims at clarifying the term “difference” since the representative sample of books that we analyze deals with its different forms. The research part in this project is divided in two chapters. In the beginning of the fourth chapter we present the aim of the research. In other words, the methodology we are going to use, which is the qualitative method, and more specifically the questions which are posed in the content analysis of the selected books as well as the criteria of the choice of our sample. The fifth chapter consists of the analytics of our selected books while in the sixth we present and the findings of our analyses and the conclusions .. In this way, the questions of this project are answered.
