Outcome measures are used in the assessment of health status and quality of life of patients. Plenty of outcome measures have been reported in literature about motor recovery in stroke population. This literature review contains 25 outcome measures used in stroke rehabilitation that evaluate recovery within the context of the motor
system. Through this evaluation it is also assessed the effectiveness of treatment interventions. The WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) provides a multi-dimensional framework for health and disability, which is used to classify the outcome measures in three domains, Body functions/structures,
Activity and Participation. These measures consist of tests, functional tasks and questionnaires about mobility, motor functioning, ADL’s and self-care. This review provides information about the psychometric properties (reliability, validity, responsiveness) and comparisons between the instruments, as provided by studies. It is suggested that the selection of outcome measures should depend on many factors
such as measurement qualities, number of items, time for test administration, required equipment and training, administration mode and cost. Recommendations for use are based on acuity level of the patient (acute, subacute or chronic stroke) and the amount of damage (mild, moderate or severe stroke).
