The social representations of migration and their role in shaping educational and professional expectations. (Master thesis)

My research interest is focused on the study of the phenomenon of migration in the mountainous minority settlements of the Prefecture of Xanthi, Pomakochoria, as in recent years the migration movements abroad, especially of Muslim men from Thrace have increased significantly with the result that on the one hand social structures, such as those of the family or the local community are changing, and on the other hand a new framework for the conception and shaping of the world by members of the minority is being formed. In this context, how are the educational and professional expectations of children living in mountainous minority communities, where migration is a common phenomenon, affected? To what extent do local social representations constitute subjectivities, and how can informal migratory movements, especially of adult males, form new meanings, both for the actors themselves and for their families? From the analysis of the data, which emerged through the conduct of nine biographical interviews, it appeared that migration is for the narrators a local social representation that reproduces the "discourse" of the community across generations. Immigration networks, as networks of actors, constitute a "construction" in which the elements of the social, physical and material world interact and reproduce social relations, "redeeming" each kind of capital in different ways. The social representation of migration in the mountainous minority settlements of Xanthi affects the attitudes and perceptions of minority members about their place in society and contributes in combination with sociolinguistic factors to educational and professional exclusion.
