The educational value of digital storytelling in early childhood education. (Master thesis)

Children nowadays live in a digital world and computers are an important element of youth culture. In the context of education, the benefits of digital technology are particularly emphasized, as computers provide children with access to unprecedented worlds and awaken a thirst for learning. A special place in the field of early childhood education holds the narrative, which contributes effectively to learning. Besides, learning is effective when offered to children in a pleasant and entertaining way. Upon appearance of multimedia elements a new form of narration, Digital storytelling has been created , which offers a variety of benefits to the educational process, providing children with further skills than simple familiarization with information and communication technologies. To create a digital story, pupils cultivate a variety of literacy skills. Initially they acquire abilities in research and analysis of information in their effort to gather the material they will use in their digital creation. Then they develop oral and written speech as they are a fundamental prerequisite to create stories but also many digital skills as they learn to use a variety of software. Also they cultivate collaboration and communication abilities with their peers , as they work together to achieve a common goal. The utilization of digital storytelling is a challenge for teachers who need to have some digital skills in order to use them in their lesson. The existence of many free software on the internet enables even novice computer users to create digital stories. The students of a kindergarten implemented digital stories and acquired many digital skills. Undoubtedly, the creation of digital stories excites pupils and makes the process of education more interesting and effective.
