Bioethical aspects of neurocybernetics (Master thesis)

In recent years scientific discoveries in the field of neuroscience combined with developments in the field of artificial intelligence have led to the development of a range of neurotechnologies. Although the applications of neurotechnology were developed and used primarily in the medical field, they are now increasingly applied in other fields (entertainment, marketing, education, defense industry). In order to investigate the bioethical dilemmas from the development and use of brain-computer interface systems (BCI), the literature review methodology proposed by Webster & Watson (2002) was followed. An increasing trend of the literature is observed in relation to both neurotechnology issues and ethical issues arising from its applications. The analysis shows that interventions in the human brain present an uncertainty regarding benefits and risks and rises issues related to human dignity, personal identity and autonomy, privacy and security, moral and legal responsibility of decisions and actions based on neurotechnology systems, research ethics, accessibility to these technologies and social justice. In addition, a presentation was made of the actions that are being taken or should be taken for the ethical development and use of BCIs. Therefore, it is considered imperative that the scientific, political and business community collaborate in order to, through bioethics, indicate the safeguards that will ensure the ethical design, development, use and management of the achievements of neurotechnology. In this direction, education can also contribute by integrating bioethics courses into study programs of departments not only of Medicine but also of other scientific fields as well as creating relevant programs at all levels of education.
