Social and economic data of unidentified immigrants derived from the forensic service (Master thesis)

Χατζόπουλος, Δημήτριος/ Chatzopoulos, Dimitrios

Forensic science is one of the main branches of Medicine. Already from ancient times its importance had been recognized and various cultures had attempted to develop it. In modern times, despite the rapid development of all sciences and technologies, the medical examiner is constantly confronted with new practical problems and ethical dilemmas. These problems become more complicated when they are also related to other transnational phenomena, not related to medicine, such as those of illegal immigration and refugee crises. These migratory flows cross routes with enormous objective risks, resulting in the loss of many lives. The Greek-Turkish border in the area of Evros, and Thrace in general, is one of these routes. The Forensic Laboratory of the Democritus University of Thrace is the competent agency that deals with the cases of dead immigrants of unknown origin. The medical examiner who manages these cases must record, classify and store data and objects of the dead immigrants and refugees, which will help both in the task of finding their identity and in further scientific study. Various economic and social data obtained in the Laboratory of Forensic Science can form the basis for scientific research related to immigration, the social and economic impact on society and the ethical problems of forensic science. As a scientist, the medical examiner is called upon to face all these ethical impasses, to recognize the importance of his work and to try to restore and upgrade his relationship with society and science. Bioethics as a science, although it attempts to provide answers to almost all questions of daily life from all aspects and approaches, will always be a field of continuous discussions, analyzes and revisions. In the above context, it is considered imperative that the forensic sciences participate in this field and keep up with the new developments and ethical imperatives of the modern era.
