Behavioral economics and bioethics (Master thesis)

Θωμαΐδου, Αλεξία/ Thomaidou, Alexia

This thesis explored the intersection of behavioral economics and bioethics, with a focus on how behavioral economics can be applied to various bioethics issues such as informed consent, organ donation, and end-of-life care. The thesis discussed the advantages of incorporating insights from behavioral economics, such as a more nuanced understanding of human decision-making, and presented examples of how behavioral economics has been used to address specific bioethics challenges. However, the thesis also acknowledged the critiques and controversies surrounding the use of behavioral economics in bioethics, including concerns about paternalism and the reduction of complex ethical dilemmas to simple behavioral biases. The thesis emphasized the importance of using behavioral economics responsibly and ethically in bioethics research and practice and offered recommendations for doing so. These recommendations include being transparent about the use of behavioral economics, respecting individual autonomy, and using behavioral economics in conjunction with other ethical frameworks. Overall, this thesis suggests that while there are challenges and controversies surrounding the use of behavioral economics in bioethics, it has the potential to provide valuable insights and tools for addressing complex ethical issues in healthcare and biomedical research. By using behavioral economics responsibly and ethically, bioethicists can help ensure that patients and research participants are empowered to make informed decisions and that their rights and interests are respected.
