Γιβαννάκης, Μάριος - Ηλίας

Headache has plagued mankind since ancient times. It concerns a painful head disorder, and is considered the most common pain syndrome that lead a patient to a doctor's office. It can take many forms and constitutes one of the main categories of chronic pain associated with patient daily disorder. Headaches are divided into primary and secondary according to the ICHD-3 criteria (The International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition, Headache Classification Committee of the International Headache Society). Secondary headaches, also include the one, attributed to disorders of the nose or the paranasal sinuses. The nose is located in the middle of the face, having a central-nodal place in the head both from an anatomic but also a functional aspect, therefore the rhinological approach of several problems of the head, with the main representative being the headache, is necessary. In this research, after reviewing the relevant literature, the mechanisms of headache are analyzed, with emphasis mainly on nasal and sinus algogen factors. This research also presents the applied diagnostic procedure and techniques, so as to recognize and categorize each headache up till the final diagnosis. Functional and morphological nasal and sinus disorders that are responsible for the pain are further analyzed.Clinical examination, using modern diagnostic techniques, such as endoscopy, as well as the appropriate imaging investigation, in the context of the rhinological diagnostic approach, lead to the correct assessment of the problem and its successful treatment.
