Medical rhinoplasty (Master thesis)

Παπαδόπουλος, Κωνσταντίνος/ Papadopoulos, Konstantinos

Introduction: Rhinoplasty is considered the queen of aesthetic interventions in the facial area. In the last decade, the shift of surgical specialties to minimally invasive techniques, combined with the development of bio-engineering and material science, highlighted non-surgical rhinoplasty with the use of injectable materials, as the first choice of patients to change the aesthetic appearance of the nose. Low cost, zero recovery time and the ease of the technique make it the number one choice of patients and doctors as a temporary solution to minor asymmetries-deformities in this area. Purpose: to provide information about injection techniques, choice of materials, prevention of complications, duration of results and patient evaluation and satisfaction. Material and Method: Extensive literature review of major databases, PUBMED/ MEDLINE, COHRANE CENTRAL, SCOPUS up to August 2022 using the terms, nonsurgical /nonsurgical/liquid/injectables/filler/fillers rhinoplasty, injectable fillers, hyaluronic acid. Results: The radix, dorsum, columellar-tip, supratip four-point injection technique appears to be the most prevalent, but the sequence of sites and mode of injections cannot be safely assessed due to the small number of cases and heterogeneity of publications. Oedema and ecchymosis are the main complications, while serious vascular complications cannot be assessed. Patient satisfaction ranges at very high rates of over 95%, but the questionnaires and the way of evaluation are very heterogeneous. Additionally, the duration of the results is controversial due to the unsatisfactory follow-up of the patients and the heterogeneity of the materials used in the different studies. Conclusions: Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a safe, minimally invasive alternative to classic rhinoplasty. The experience of the doctor, the detailed knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the area, the quality of the material and the choice of the patients is what will contribute to an impeccable aesthetic result.
