Introduction: Sleep disturbances can affect people’s health and well-being, as well as their driving performance and productivity and raise concerns about public health and safety issues by causing accidents. Aim: Aim of the study was to assess sleep quality of professional drivers working in public railway transport means in Athens, namely at the metro or tram system and post-traumatic stress disorder following exposure to a traumatic event. In addition, to investigate the association between sleep quality and the occurrence of mental disorders and to explore determinants of sleep quality. Methods: A cross-sectional study using a convenience sample was conducted among 121 drivers employed at the tram and metro system in Athens, Greece. Data was collected between May and July 2022. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to assess sleep quality, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire was used to assess anxiety and depression, the Impact of Event Scale (IES-R) questionnaire was used to assess posttraumatic stress and the STOP-BANG questionnaire was used to assess obstructive sleep apnea. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS program. Results: The majority of participants answered that the quality of sleep was quite good (57%), while 15.7% of participants described their sleep quality as quite poor and 0.8% as poor. Sleep efficiency was >85% for most of the study participants (70.2%), indicating good sleep quality. Total sleep quality score was positively correlated to total anxiety and depression score (p<0.001). In addition, post-traumatic stress disorder score was positively related to total anxiety and depression score (p=0.023). It was also found that individuals at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea had a higher total quality score than individuals at low and medium risk for obstructive sleep apnea (p=0.004). Conclusions: Maintaining sleep quality is very important for professional railway drivers as it is important for them to ensure safety at work. Good quality sleep can protect their health, wellbeing and thus help them avoid accidents and injuries at work.
