Introduction: A particularly common problem associated with the cancer experience is sleep disturbances, and for this reason, they have gained much attention from both researchers and clinicians. Poor sleep quality is very important because it can have serious consequences for oncology patients, as it worsens the outcome of the disease, the already existing psychological distress and their poor quality of life.
Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to investigate the quality of sleep in oncology patients. Methodology: The sample consisted of 112 patients with cancer living in Greece, who were approached through convenience sampling by 2 units of the General Oncology Hospital “Agioi Anargyroi” in Kifissia. The main data collection tool was the questionnaire, and the statistical analysis of the data was carried out with the statistical package SPSSv22. Results: The present research was conducted on a total of 112 cancer patients, with mean age 64,50 ± 6,94 years, most of whom suffered from lung cancer, while the mean duration of cancer presence in the total sample was equal to 5,63 ± 2.46 years. In the cancer patients, there were moderate levels of nocturnal sleep (8,33 ± 3,46) and moderate levels of daytime disturbance scores and management of sleep problems (2,4 ± 2,05). The overall sleep quality of patients with cancer who participated in the present research was, on average, at moderate levels (10,73 ± 5,04), and the 2/3 of the sample presented the phenomenon of restless limbs during sleep at least some times a week. From the inductive analysis of the present research, many were the demographic characteristics that were statistically significantly associated with sleep quality and with the presence of restless legs phenomenon (gender, age, education, work status, financial status, marital status, years of presence of cancer, hematocrit value). Conclusions: Cancer patients present moderate levels of sleep quality and a quite high prevalence of restless legs, even for some times a week, and many demographic and clinical factors are significantly related to sleep quality. In this context, specific
therapeutic interventions aiming at improving the quality of sleep of cancer patients should be developed, either through medication or through other therapeutic methods.
