Collaborative learning in Distance Education at University: (Master thesis)

Δημόπουλος, Κωνσταντίνος/ Dimopoulos, Konstantinos

In the years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, the education sector was directly affected by COVID-19, since the main measure to deal with the virus was the suspension of all educational institutions. University institutions, looking for an immediate solution to the problem of course continuity and bearing in mind the rapid development of technologies, have come to the urgent transfer of their courses from live to distance education. In this transition, the role of university teachers was important, since they were called upon, in a short period, and with all the technological knowledge and technological equipment they had, to meet their obligations, using synchronous and/or asynchronous distance learning platforms. Synchronous and asynchronous distance learning platforms are equipped with tools, plugins, and modules that support the use of a multitude of collaborative learning techniques. This research investigates the views of higher education teachers on collaborative learning in distance education and the collaborative learning techniques they applied to their teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, through tools, plugins, and modules provided by the synchronous and/or asynchronous distance learning platforms. The research is quantitative, for the implementation of which an electronic questionnaire was used with mainly closed-ended questions. The sample consisted of male and female teachers of Greek Universities, provided that they taught during the pandemic period in higher education. The results show that the teachers, for the most part, have a positive attitude towards collaborative learning in distance education, in which, indeed, they recognize various advantages. They also appreciate the possibilities offered by online platforms, tools, plugins, and modules for the implementation of collaborative learning activities while, at the same time, they recognize their new, multiple roles and the role of their students during the implementation of remote collaborative activities. However, many identify disadvantages in the method as well as multiple obstacles that may have acted as a deterrent in terms of the implementation of distance collaborative activities.
