Comparison of the thickness of the macula and the retinal nerve fiber layer of the optic disc between dominant and non-dominant eyes using OCT, in individuals with perfect visual acuity in both eyes (10/10 BCVA) and no ocular pathology, in the greek population (Master thesis)

The dominance of one eye refers to the conscious or unconscious preference of using one eye more than the other. All individuals have a dominant and non-dominant eye. The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is a difference in the overall thickness of the macula and the total thickness of the nerve fibers of the optic disc between the dominant and non-dominant eye. In this study, 75 patients participated, all with best-corrected visual acuity of 10/10 in both eyes and without any pathological findings during the ophthalmic examination. The dominant eye was determined using the "hole in the card" test (sighting ocular dominance). The overall thickness of the macula and the nerve fiber layer of the optic nerve (RNFL Average Thickness) were measured using OCT device. The median age of the participants was 28 years with a range of 18-50 years. Of the total participants, 51 (68%) were males and 24 (32%) were females. Additionally, 47 (62.67%) had right eye dominance. We observed that in dominant eyes, the RNFL was 0.9μm higher compared to non-dominant eyes, with a statistically significant p-value of 0.0009. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant difference in the average thickness of the macula, as well as the superior (Superior RNFL) and inferior (Inferior RNFL) thicknesses between dominant and non-dominant eyes.
