Literature Review: Open Angle Glaucoma (Master thesis)

Γιαννουκάκη, Αικατερίνη/ Giannoukaki, Aikaterini

Purpose: Literature review of imaging techniques in open angle glaucoma and the evaluation points. Method: Review of Pubmed and Scopus databases. The chosen keywords were: open angle glaucoma, oct, octa, optical coherence tomography, optical coherence tomography angiography, visual fields, visual field, perimetry. Results: Standard Automated Perimetry is the most common form of visual field testing. Glaucoma Hemifield Test and Visual Field Index are reliable indices for the detection of early defects and progression respectively. From all OCT parameters, Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer thickness and thickness of inner macular layers have the highest diagnostic ability. OCTA is a relatively new imaging modality that provides a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the vasculature changes in open angle glaucoma. Conclusions: Visual field testing remains the most important tool for characterizing and monitoring visual function in open angle glaucoma. However, OCT is playing an increasing role in glaucoma diagnosis, monitoring of disease progress, and quantification of structural damage. OCTA has shown promising results and provides additional parameters in glaucoma assessment.
