Crop adaptation, yield and economic efficiency of sunflower in the region of Evros (Master thesis)

This thesis deals with the adaptation, yield and economic efficiency of sunflower cultivation in the region of Evros. The recording and illustration of the general context of sunflower cultivation is examined in the first chapter and specifically refers to the cultivation of sunflower internationally, in Europe, Greece and Evros, the consumption of sunflower worldwide, in Europe, Greece and Evros, the structure of the global sunflower trade, the corresponding position of Greece and the economic viability of cultivation. Reference is also made to the contribution of the crop to the agricultural sector and specifically to Evros and its environmental, soil, water and technological requirements. In the second chapter, the main sunflower pests such as the insects Agrotis segetum, Homoeosoma electellum, Aphisfabae, the diseases that affect them such as sclerotinia, botrytis, head rot, Alternaria, Phytophthora, Verticillium, peronospora and weeds of sunflower cultivation and their control measures are described, the environmental effects associated with sunflower such as low and high temperatures, salinity and finally its qualitative traits where reference is made to the nutrients contained in sunflower seed and its uses as sunflower oil, biodiesel, for human consumption as a snack, as bird food etc.
