Έλεγχος δραστικότητας του βασιλικού πολτού μελισσών σε χρωματοσώματα λεμφοκυττάρων ανθρώπου (Bachelor thesis)

Αντωνίου, Κωνσταντίνος

The following bachelor thesis was conducted at the Laboratory of Genetics of the Department of Medicine of Democritus University of Thrace, under the supervision of Professor Theodore S. Lialiaris. The main purpose of this research is the study of genotoxicity, and after this, the study of cytostaticity and cytotoxicity of the honey bees royal jelly (R.J.), the genus Apis mellifera macedonica, on human chromosomes after cultivation of peripheral lymphocytes (in vitro study). The substance which is under research, is used in four different concentrations, 0.05% w/v, 0.1% w/v, 0.3% w/v και 0.6% w/v, in two experiments. In this research, as positive marker in the experiments is used the antineoplastic drug, camptothecin (CPT), which has proven genotoxic abilities. Therefore, the previous noted royal jelly (R.J.) concentrations, were tested alone or mixed up with CPT, for assessment of possible synergistic effect. The results are indicating that pure royal jelly shows low genotoxicity, low to high cytostaticity and low to high cytotoxicity. When royal jelly (R.J.) is mixed up with antineoplastic drug CPT-11, R.J. acts synergistically or auxiliaries the effects of CPT. Thereafter, compared with the positive marker CPT, the royal jelly (R.J.), indicates high levels of genotoxicity, causes small changes in cytostaticity, and shows low to high levels of cytotoxicity, in a dose-dependent way. In conclusion, according to the results of the research, the R.J. should be injected with great caution, and also, more experiments required to clarify all the questions of this research.
