Exploration and comparison of sleep quality and well-being between intensive care unit nurses and clinic nurses in a tertiary hospital (Master thesis)

Γκεσούλη, Ιωάννα/ Gkesouli, Ioanna

Introduction: This study focuses on the investigation of sleep quality and well-being in nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and in the clinic of a tertiary hospital. The aim is to compare the two groups, considering factors like working conditions, work stress and social relationships. Methodology: The study was carried out on 200 nurses, 150 from one group and 50 from the other group respectively. Data were collected with surveys, which included: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-19) questionnaire (to assess sleep quality) and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index questionnaire (to assess well-being) as well as some other questions about work stress, social relationships and demographics. Results: It was demonstrated that nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) have worse sleep quality and a lower level of well-being compared to their colleagues in clinics. In addition, it was revealed that lack of or disturbed sleep is negatively associated with their daily life and mental health. Work stress and social relationships also affect their sleep quality and well-being, raising the need for intervention to benefit their health and well-being. Conclusions: The comparison between nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and clinics shows that the former face more difficulties in sleeping and have a lower level of well-being. This is due to the high demand and stress that comes with working in ICUs. In addition to the place where each team works, work stress and social relationships affect their sleep quality and well-being. These indicate the need for interventions such as reducing work stress and promoting social cohesion to improve the situation of nurses, particularly in ICUs, in order to ensure effective patient care.
