Intercultural utilization of the references to Greek culture in the modern greek language textbooks of the 6th Grade (Master thesis)

The present master's thesis entitled "Intercultural utilization of the references to Greek culture in the Modern Greek Language Textbooks of the 6th Grade " aims to record and analytically present elements of Greek culture, as they are presented in the 6th Grade school language textbooks. According to the Ιnterdisciplinary Unified Framework Study Program -Detailed Study Program of the language course, language is a communication system, a means of understanding, expression, critical thinking and a carrier of culture. Due to the fact that the language is a means of integrating foreign students into Greek society, it must
be used in a simple and understandable way. The purpose of the research is to verify if it is true that the specific school textbooks are written based on the principles and values of intercultural education. An attempt will be made to answer research questions, such as: what are the types of references found, if they are numerically satisfactory and if
they can be used didactically in the modern multicultural primary school to achieve the goals of intercultural education. The research concerns the content of both the texts and the illustrations of the
manual. The method chosen to conduct the research is quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The research shows, among other things, that the textbooks studied include a sufficient number of references to Greek culture, which cover a wide range of culture, both material and spiritual. At the end of the paper, proposals are formulated for the
cross-cultural utilization of the references identified, with the aim of raising students' awareness, communication, familiarity with Greek and other cultures and the cultivation of empathy.
