Water transportation system design with EPANET software (Master thesis)

The aim of this study is the hydraulic solution of a water transport network in the area of Thermia using the hydraulic analytical equations and the EPANET program. Initially, reference is made to water as it constitutes a fundamental natural resource. The impact of human activities on the water cycle, its importance as an economic and environmental good as well as the management measures to be taken that need to be taken for sustainable development. Then, the definition of water distribution networks is provided, accompanied by a historical overview. The structure and types of water distribution networks are analyzed, distinguishing between radial and grid networks, and highlighting the differences between the internal and external aqueduct. Following that, the design of a water transport network and its operational requirements are presented. In the next chapter, reference is made to the external reservoir outlining its main sections and the basic specifications that must be followed for proper layout. Subsequently, the EPANET software program is introduced, discussing its capability to model a water distribution network, emphasizing both the hydraulic capabilities of the program and its ability to model water quality. The working interface of the program and its usage steps are presented. Finally, a study is conducted on the construction of the external water supply reservoir in the area of Thermia, analyzing the water transport system using hydraulic analytical equations as well as the EPANET software.
