The importance of diet in hemodialysis (Master thesis)

Χασιωτάκη, Μαρία/ Chasiotaki, Maria

Hemodialysis (HD) accounts for 89% of the global treatment for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (ESKD) (Liyanage et al. 2015). Hemodialysis (HD) is considered optimal treatment, according to medical guidelines for the management of end-stage chronic kidney disease (ESKD) (National Kidney Foundation, 2015). An important problem faced by this group of patients is malnutrition with a global prevalence of 28-54% and a mortality risk of 1.61 to 4.08 (Carrero et al. 2018). Several factors are responsible for malnutrition in dialysis patients. Protein-energy intake is often reduced due to inappropriate dietary restrictions, anorexia, and taste disturbances, promoting malnutrition in most dialysis patients. The purpose of the following work is to study what causes malnutrition in hemostatic patients and how it is treated.Nutritional assessment of the patient and appreciation of the source of malnutrition is critical for health care professionals to provide individualized care and to determine treatment strategies for the hemodialysis patient's malnutrition.
