Καρατζένη, Λευκοθέα/ Karatzeni, Lefkothea

This thesis aims to explore the unique and highly specialized nature of military nursing. It examines the training, skills, and challenges faced by military nurses in both combat and peacetime settings and focuses on the bioethical dilemmas that arise from the particularities of their role. Military nursing combines the provision of high-quality medical care with the performance of military duties. Military nurses, as an integral part of the Armed Forces, are called upon to serve in various branches such as the Land Army, Navy and Air Force. Their responsibilities extend beyond traditional nursing duties and include readiness for deployment to combat zones, disaster response and participation in humanitarian missions. This dual role requires a distinct set of skills and competencies and entails a rigorous and specialized training program that prepares them for the challenges of military service. The education and training of military nurses is multidimensional, combining basic military training with specialized nursing education. It is more intensive and flexible compared to civilian nursing training, as it focuses on adaptability, resilience and the ability to operate in adverse conditions. Military nurses must be prepared to provide care in a variety of settings, from well-equipped hospitals to makeshift field clinics, often under extreme pressure and with limited resources. Continuing education and professional development are vital for military nurses, as they participate in regular training programs to stay up to date with the latest advances in medical science and technology. Military nursing faces unique ethical challenges in both wartime and peacetime. During war, nurses must balance between providing care and the demands of military operations, dealing with combat trauma and resource allocations. In peacetime, they focus on maintaining high standards of care, patient rights, and integrating military and civilian health practices. Ongoing ethics education is essential to address evolving challenges and societal values. The findings of this study highlight the importance of military nursing as a critical component in the delivery of healthcare and in support of military operations. Continuing ethical education and professional development are essential to ensure the quality of care provided by military nurses in both combat and peacetime settings. Their contribution to national defense and global health is undeniable, and their ongoing training and support enables them to meet the demands of their role successfully and humanely.
