Assessing paternal emotional neglect from a developmental perspective (Master thesis)

This analysis examines emotional neglect by the father, adopting a developmental approach and focusing on a systematic review based on existing research. Emotional neglect, which often goes unnoticed, involves the parent’s failure to meet the emotional needs of the child, which can have significant consequences for the child’s emotional and psychosocial development. Due to limited research attention given to the father’s role in child- rearing, particularly in terms of emotional distance, this study focuses on examining the consequences on this condition by exploring the effects across various developmental stages, from childhood to adulthood. The studies included in this research highlight the consequences of paternal emotional neglect, such as the emergence of mental disorders, behavioral problems, low self- esteem, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Additionally, the importance of paternal emotional involvement is emphasized as a critical factor for the healthy psychosocial development of children. Overall, the study underscores the need for further research and awareness regarding the issue of emotional neglect by the father. Recognizing the significance of the paternal role in the child’s emotional development is crucial for preventing and addressing the negative consequences that arise from emotional neglect.
