Opinions and practices of primary school teachers’ on bilingualism in the classroom (Master thesis)

The increase in migration flows as a result of economic and social development and war conflicts has led to a shift from a culturally and linguistically homogeneous society to a multicultural and pluralistic one, with significant manifestations in the school community. This new reality brought about the need to study the phenomenon of bilingualism and the education of students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The aim of this research is to investigate the views of Greek teachers regarding bilingual education and the practices they apply in a classroom with bilingual students. Eighty-one primary school teachers from all over Greece participated in the survey by answering a structured questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions. The results showed a contradiction between the views and practices followed. In general, their views on bilingualism are positive and they consider the use of the mother tongue a right of bilinguals. On the other hand, they agree that knowing more languages does not imply better school performance and that frequent use of the first language makes it difficult to learn Greek, perceptions that reveal a monolingual way of thinking. However, their practices are supportive of bilingualism, as most argue that they make use of both the linguistic and cultural capital of bilingual students. Finally, the research points to the need for training in intercultural issues and in managing bilingualism in the classroom.
