Greek Traditional Dance as a means of Intercultural Education: (Master thesis)

Γιοβανούδη, Μαρία/ Giovanoudi, Maria

In this dissertation, the Greek Traditional Dance is investigated as an element of mediation for Intercultural Education, especially at the level of preschool education. From the study of the bibliographic references, which frame the theoretical part of the work, the concept of G.T.D, the ways of learning and the role of the choir teacher in it is clarified. Then, by focusing on Primary Education, the importance of music-motor education, in general, and G.T.D, in particular, for preschool children is highlighted. The study of the theoretical framework is completed with the clarification of the principles of Intercultural Education and the integration of the G.T.D. in the latter. The research is based on the Anthropology of Education and the method of Ethnography, on which the theoretical framework of the work is formed and is based on a case study of preschool children. This study was conducted within the typical educational environment, i.e. within a specific school unit. The data was collected according to the method of participatory observation, action research and case study. Therefore, the second part of the dissertation presents three courses during which the learning of greek and foreign traditional dance is carried out with the application of both traditional and modern teaching methods. The aim of the action research is to highlight improvisation as a modern method capable of promoting interculturality in education through the G.T.D. In addition, semi-structured focus group interviews of parents and teachers were conducted. From the conclusions of the research-action it emerged that improvisation develops in the child the feeling of respect and the acceptance of diversity, leads him to autonomy and spiritual liberation with the ultimate goal of cultivating and promoting interculturalism.
