The construction of the identity of the young Muslims of the prefecture of Xanthi in the context of Education (Master thesis)

The present study was carried out with the aim of investigating the way of constructing the identities of young Muslims in the prefecture of Xanthi in the context of their education. Specifically, the different identities that are constructed at different times during the discusions about their educational years are researched. According to the social identity theory, seen through in the eyes of Discourse Analysis, identity is characterized as a changing social construction, which is the result of interaction with others. To achieve the above objective, the qualitative data collection method was considered appropriate. Therefore, 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 young members of the Muslim minority between the ages of 20-29. Utilizing the Thematic Discourse Analysis the data were classified into categories, while then the method which followed was the Discourse Analysis.The results showed that different identities are constructed in different contexts and therefore the content and boundaries of the groups change. This fact, on the one hand, attributes to the concept of identity the characterization of changing in space and time, and on the other hand, it is part of the result of simultaneously belonging to multiple identities.
