The management of cultural heritage is a new, developing field in Greece that at-tracts the interest of both experts and the general public, and the study of Byzantine monuments and the fortification art of the Byzantine period is an equally fascinating object. In this dissertation of the postgraduate program «Studies in Local History - Inter-disciplinary Approaches» of the Department of History and Ethnology of Democritus University of Thrace I tried to study and record the monumental topography of the Pro-vincia Rodopae of Dioecesis Thraciae during the early Byzantine period, but also the residential and fortification structure of the Thracian country in the specific historical period, aiming at the wider medieval. So, an attempt is made, through examples of spe-cific monuments, in combination with the study of the local history of Thrace, to demonstrate the need to create conditions for their preservation and promotion, but also the wider cultural heritage of the region.
