The dimension of Bioethics in the Certification Systems of Clinical Control Laboratories (Master thesis)

Ίμβρου, Αγγελική/ Imvrou, Angeliki

This paper examines the role of bioethics in Clinical Laboratory Certification Systems, with a focus on international standards such as ISO 15189, CAP (College of American Pathologists), and CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute). Clinical laboratories play a crucial role in healthcare by contributing to patient diagnosis and treatment. The ethical dimension of their processes involves the handling of sensitive data, the use of human samples, and ensuring the quality of results. Laboratory certification is based on the adherence to strict standards that incorporate ethical principles, such as patient protection and responsible scientific practice. The study provides an in-depth analysis of ISO 15189, which is actively implemented in Greece and serves as the standard for clinical laboratory certification. The historical development of ISO 15189 is explored, alongside the core principles it incorporates, including result accuracy, repeatability, and data management. Challenges such as the cost of certification are also discussed, and ways to increase the number of certified laboratories in Greece are suggested. The paper concludes that the integration of bioethics into laboratory certification processes is essential for maintaining public trust, ensuring the quality of services, and promoting responsible scientific research.
