Leadership styles and conflict management in teams (Master thesis)

Κοτόπουλος, Στυλιανός/ Kotopoulos, Stylianos

This thesis examines the link between leadership styles and conflict management in teams. In the context of the research problem, the study seeks to explain how the styles of leadership - transactional versus transformational - have implications for conflict management in workplaces and thereafter affect the performance of employees. The method will be based on the collection of quantitative data from employees in various organizations, with an analysis based on advanced statistical methods. Indeed, these findings suggest that transformational leadership develops amply the commitment of employees, instills cooperation in them, and manages efficiently the conflicts revolving around tasks and relationships. On the other hand, transactional leadership focuses on compliance and efficiency and, therefore, regulates process-related conflict relatively well. Task conflicts lead to innovation as long as they are managed properly but relationship conflicts always lower the effect of performance. This meant that the study emphasized a dire need for leaders who adapt to the varying needs of their teams and sustain conflicts in order to get better performance and team cohesion.
