Sustainable business success and gaining a competitive advantage in the Green Era (Master thesis)
Ρέστας, Βασίλειος/ Restas, Vasileios
It is a widely accepted notion among researchers, practitioners, and governments that sustainable development is important for business and firms. But to what extent does sustainability function as a source of competitive advantage? Can sustainability play a role in increased market performance, or is it mainly about reputation? Finally, how should a company behave in order to reach a status of competitive advantage through sustainability? Researchers argue that consumer demand for sustainable products and services keeps growing, whereas companies are struggling to provide sustainable options. Are companies simply failing to satisfy this demand, or are there other behavioral patterns that are limiting their steps toward sustainability? Is it becoming increasingly important for companies to offer sustainable alternatives? A company’s approach toward sustainability is also, to a certain extent, impacted by the gradually increasing number of regulations of the environment, including emissions, pollution, waste management, and permits. So, in which direction should businesses move in order to gain a status of competitive advantage through their sustainability approach? These and other questions will be addressed in the first chapters through the presentation of several conceptual models and arguments. In the following pages, much is to be discussed in terms of theory development and explanation. But we should also look at a well-documented managerial case in which the transposition of theory into practice goes through different stages in addressing sustainability as a source of competitive advantage. In sustainability, strategies and decisions are usually attended by economists as drivers for competitive advantage, with entrepreneurs or businesses being considered more or less yielders or adopters of actions that are thought of as a market trend. However, a customer-led view of sustainability will have little impact on organization structure and its strategic positioning.
