The objective of the present study is to examine the laws of war as they are reflected in Thucydides’ History. The investigation adopts a dual approach: a textual analysis of the eight books of the History and a bibliographical exploration of the legal and political context in which these events unfold. As a preliminary step toward engaging with the archival material, a concise overview of the historical, political, and legal framework of the period was deemed necessary. The study proceeds with a systematic analysis of the treaties and armistices concluded during the course of the war, the role of arbitration as a mechanism for conflict resolution and as a preventive measure against war, the treatment of prisoners and deserters, practices concerning the burial and despoiling of the dead, and, lastly, the fate of suppliants. All issues are approached through the interpretive framework of justice and injustice, as perceived and articulated by the respective parties involved in the conflict. The study concludes with a synthesis of findings, demonstrating that, according to Thucydides, the concepts of justice and injustice are inherently subjective and closely tied to the interests of the opposing factions. Furthermore, it becomes evident that war acts as a violent instructor, contributing to the dehumanization of individuals and making no distinction between combatants and vulnerable civilian populations.
