Education during the Colonels’ Regime 1967-1974 (Bachelor thesis)
Κυριακίδου, Σοφία/ Kyriakidou, Sofia
This paper examines the political and educational developments during the period
1958-1974. This time frame is characterized by various political crises, with the most
significant being the change in the political system of Greece. Specifically, during the
period 1958-1967, although the country's political system was a democracy, the
changes that occurred in the political arena led the country to continuous tensions. The
result of this situation was the imposition of the military dictatorship on April 21, 1967.
In order to control the formation of ideas, the dictatorial government imposed strict
censorship and restrictions, especially in the educational system, by modifying
curricula. The aim was to strengthen propaganda in favor of the regime, while freedom
of thought and expression was restricted. Special attention is given to the role of the
inspector, who exercised control over both teachers and students, ensuring their loyalty
to the dictatorship's policies. The paper concludes with the empirical part of the
research, which involves the collection and analysis of data, through interviews related
to daily life and school life during the dictatorship period, from individuals who lived
through that time.
