This study explores the significance of gender in the context of armed conflicts, focusing on the dynamics of gender-based violence, its legal treatment, and its social dimensions. Starting from the historical evolution of recognizing gender-based violence as an international crime, it analyzes its multifaceted features in wartime conditions, where violence against women and other vulnerable groups is used as a strategic tool of destruction and social control. The study highlights legal challenges arising in international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the implementation and comprehensive integration of the gender dimension into the provisions protecting victims. It emphasizes the need for an interdisciplinary approach combining legal, sociological, and humanitarian analyses to effectively combat gender-based violence in conflicts. Moreover, it points out contemporary proposals aimed at strengthening protection and the administration of justice through the revision of international norms, raising awareness among responsible actors, and broader recognition of the social and cultural characteristics of gender. Finally, it underlines the importance of adopting comprehensive policies and actions that consider the complexity and particular needs of victims, contributing to the promotion of equality, justice, and social cohesion during periods of armed conflict.
