This Master’s Thesis focuses on Human Rights Education (HRE) in secondary education in Greece, with particular emphasis on the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The aim of the study is to investigate students’ understanding and perception of human rights, as well as to analyze the factors affecting their integration into school curricula. The research is based on a theoretical review, an analysis of legislation and curricula, and an empirical approach involving both quantitative and qualitative methods, including questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers. The findings indicate that students possess general awareness of human rights; however, deeper understanding and practical application are influenced by factors such as school culture, teachers’ educational approaches, and the socio-cultural specificities of the region. Moreover, the presence of minority communities and the multicultural character of Thrace highlight the necessity of a cross-curricular and experiential approach to HRE, aiming to foster values such as solidarity, equality, and respect for diversity. The results emphasize the importance of continuous teacher training, the development of appropriate educational material, and the implementation of participatory teaching methods to ensure that HRE is effective and experiential. The study concludes that HRE can serve as a key tool for promoting democratic awareness and social cohesion, particularly in regions with historical and social diversity, such as the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
