The impact of endometriosis on oocyte and embryo quality in IVF cycles (Bachelor thesis)

Introduction-Purpose: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent, inflammatory gynecological disorder characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. It represents one of the most common causes of infertility among women of reproductive age and may adversely affect reproductive outcomes. This study aims to investigate the impact of endometriosis on oocyte and embryo quality in in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and to evaluate the available evidence regarding its effects on assisted reproductive outcomes. Material and Method: This study is based on a review of international and Greek scientific literature, including articles addressing the pathology of endometriosis, as well as reviews and clinical studies identified through recognized scientific databases and reliable online sources. The collected data were analyzed to assess the relationship between endometriosis, oocyte quality, embryo development, and IVF outcomes. Conclusion: The data of the reviewed literature suggest that endometriosis may have a negative influence on female fertility via multiple mechanisms, including alterations in the microenvironment, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Although several studies indicate a potentially serious effect on oocyte and embryo quality, the available evidence remains inconsistent. It is important that more high-quality research takes place to further clarify the extent of the disease's impact on IVF outcomes and to improve therapeutic approaches for affected patients.
