Τeachers' views on their participation in the process of appointing a school principal (Master thesis)

This thesis investigated the views of primary school teachers regarding their participation in the school principal selection process, an issue that has been repeatedly legislatively changed in recent years in Greece. The aim of the study was to record the degree of acceptance, attitude, perception of their role and the factors that influence their willingness to participate in the school leadership selection processes. The research was implemented with a quantitative methodology, through a closed-ended questionnaire, which was distributed to primary school teachers and the sample amounted to 143 teachers. The results showed that teachers believe that they should have an active role in the selection of principals and that participation enhances transparency, democracy and a sense of collective responsibility. In addition, it was found that information, personal experiences of cooperation with principals and the instability of the legislative framework influence teachers' attitudes. Finally, participants perceive school leadership as a collaborative role and not a purely administrative one, considering that the principal should function as a coordinator, animator and a source of trust within the school community.
